Tutankhamun show
A major show of ancient Egyptian artefacts, ‘Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs’, will open in London this autumn (November 15 – August 30, 2008). The first exhibition at the new O2 centre, formerly the Millennium Dome, in Greenwich, it will feature 130 treasures from the Valley of the Kings tombs and a gallery dedicated to Howard Carter, the British archaeologist who discovered the boy king’s tomb in 1922. It is 30 years since the treasures of Tutankhamun appeared in the capital at the British Museum, an exhibition visited by a record-breaking 1.8 million people.

Cycle the royal River Thames The Tour de France cycle race may be starting in London for the first time this summer, but leisure cyclists are being offered a chance to ‘go with the flow’ on a different route to the capital. Cycling holiday company Capital Sport has planned a nine-night self-guided tour following the River Thames from its official source near Cirencester in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier, east of the capital.
This 200 mile adventure uses bridleways, bike paths and quiet country lanes to criss cross the river, calling at the university city of Oxford, regatta town Henley and Marlow, before passing Eton, home of the boys’ college, around the castle at Windsor and past the palaces at Hampton Court, Kew and Westminster.
Almost traffic free, the route threads its way through the heart of London with an overnight stop beside the London Eye. Nine nights in hand-picked hotel or inn accommodation, luggage transfers, bike hire (optional), easy-to-follow route directions and emergency cover are included in the cost, from £828 per person.
