A passenger was found dead in the bathroom of an airplane shortly before landing in Costa Rica, in what is strongly suspected as a mid-flight suicide.
The lifeless body of Romanian businessman Costel Comana, 53, was reportedly discovered hanging inside the bathroom of an Avianca flight from Bogota, Colombia.
Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the incident.
"According to the preliminary information we have, the Romanian citizen allegedly committed suicide by strangulation," the ministry said in a statement.
Comana was allegedly one of the richest men in Romania but was currently under investigation in a corruption case.
It is thought he had fled Romania to evade prosecution.
The body was discovered by his travel partner, a 35 year old Romanian woman and flight crew just minutes before the scheduled landing in Costa Rica.
