Gambia malaria warning

Holidaymakers to the Gambia are being urged to take precautions following an unspecified number of deaths and illness from malaria.

An increased number of confirmed cases of severe malaria have been reported to the Health Protection Agency amongst UK holidaymakers returning from the West African country over recent months, including fatalities.

The Federation of Tour Operators has been liaising with the HPA about malaria.

The agency “strongly advised” travel agents and tour operators to inform clients of the need to take appropriate medication against malaria for travel to all affected areas, including the Gambia.

This will need to be taken prior to, during and after their holiday. Clients should also be advised to take precautions against being bitten by mosquitos, the HPA said.

A statement said: “There are several recommended medication options for the Gambia that need to be started between one day and three weeks prior to arrival. All are only available on prescription.

“Clients booking late or taking advantage of late departure offers need to be alerted to the time that may be required to adequately prepare themselves against the risk of malaria.

“Trade partners are asked to ensure that this advice is drawn to the attention of customers and where appropriate included in websites and literature.”
