Gatwick anticipates bank holiday boost

Gatwick airport expects to see a 6% rise in passenger numbers this school half-term, with Malaga the most popular getaway.

The airport says 550,000 passengers will be leaving Britain from its terminals over the holidays – just in time to avoid the grim weather forecast which will mark an end to May’s all time high seasonal temperatures.

While 12,000 people are heading for Malaga, the second most popular getaway is Palma de Mallorca followed by Dublin, Faro and Dalaman.

Head of terminals at Gatwick Paul Fitch said: “The combination of the spring bank holiday and school half-term offers great opportunities for families to enjoy some quality time together in popular hot spots abroad, or to join friends and family in other parts of the UK.

“For the bank holiday weekend, we expect to handle around 550,000 passengers, which is 6% more passengers than last year.”

The top ten holiday destinations from Gatwick this half-term are:

  • Malaga
  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Dublin
  • Faro
  • Dalaman
  • Madrid
  • Alicante
  • Orlando
  • Edinburgh
  • Jersey
