Gatwick loses council support for second runway
Gatwick has lost the support of a second country council for its plans for a second runway.
West Sussex County Council has reversed its decision taken in July 2013 to back the airport’s expansion.
It said it was concerned about the high level of local opposition to the additional runway. The council said Gatwick had not put forward enough evidence to counter resident’s concerns about environmental impact or additional noise caused by a second runway.
Kent County Council withdrew its backing for a second runway last November due to concerns that the proposed new flight paths would increase noise for its residents.
The Airports Commission is considering Gatwick’s plan against either a third runway at Heathrow or extending Heathrow’s existing runways.
