Gen Y Molers give the Gold Coast the thumbs up!

Sunday, 21 Dec, 2007 0

I know that us Gen Y’ers are all spoilt, having been brought up in an internet driven world, a consumer society, lacking for nothing, but we are are also very demanding and know what we want!

So, I suppose the thing that struck Nat, Borgie and me when we visited the Gold Coast on location for TravelMole is that while the reputation of the Gold Coast is as a retirement area, it has much broader appeal, with heaps of things for us Gen Y’ers to do, with the Gold Coast having become very smart and more appealing to much younger consumers than the good old retirees.

Yes, there are still heaps of retirees around the streets, but the plethora of theme parks, smart shops good , smart restaurants and good accommodation really make the Gold Coast, not only also a great family destination, but also a great place for us GenY’ers to visit.

There is no doubt that the Vibe Hotel is funky and it is great to see a hotel group targeting Gen Y high spenders, but we do expect high standards, so they have to get the breakfast and the welcome right!  We really enjoyed the Vibe Gold Coast and liked the funky colours, but they need to look a bit closer at really delivering the funky stay they promise carrying the funky style into the staff, the food and into the rooms.  Having said that it is a cool hotel and we enjoyed it.

Getting around the Gold Coast is rally easy and our Red Spot Car Rental Nissan Tida was perfect as we did not need to go very far and it was so good on fuel.

We suspect, though but we don’t know, that it is easier to use a car than struggle to sort out public transport.  Red Spot Rental seem to have their customer care, product and prices sorted, offering an all inclusive price, which is really cool.

We had no hassle with Red Spot whatsoever and Red Spot also rent cars to under 25’s, which many others do not!

While we only visited two parks, Dreamworld  and Wet’n’Wild, they offer a pretty good sample or cross section of the parks on offer and ther e is no doubt that they are both great parks, hard to choose between them.

The rides at Dreamworld were really excellent and it is definitely a full day out.  Wet’n’Wild is clearly very wet , with some really hot rides and we are sorry we do not have any pics, but where do you put a camera  when all you have on is a bikini!

The thing that also struck us is that the rides at both Dreamworld and Wet’n’Wild are modern, up to the minute rides and while the parks are smaller than the parks in the US and even in parts of Europe, they  are no less exciting or up to the minute, any less well presented or run – I should know, I have been to heaps!

So, for Gen Y’ers is the Gold Coast a place to go?

Without hesitation we all said, yes indeed and we will be back – this time for a week, which we think is about right or if you are busy, then a long weekend might suit.

There are heaps of other things to do that we didn’t get around to, including great surfing and visiting the top of the 19th tallest building in the world, the tallest all-residential building in the world and tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, the 322.5 metres/1,058 feet and 78 stories Q1, completed in 2005.

What was that Borgie?  The plane is waiting and it is time to go back to Sydney – what can I say, your own private plane is the only way to fly – so Gen Y!

The final on location report from the Gold Coast by the Gen Y Molers!

Have a really great Christmas and a fantastic New Year!
