Glamping cabins on skis promise unique Northern lights experience

Sunday, 23 Mar, 2018 0

A new experience has been launched in Northern Finland allowing holidaymakers to hunt for the Northern lights while tucked up in bed.

Guests can book a glamping cabin on skis, with a clear viewing roof, that will be towed into a remote location, deep in the Arctic Circle, east of Kilpisjarvi.

Cabins measure 2.5m wide, 4.5m long and 2m tall, and are equipped with a wide bed, a table, dry toilet and a gas heater with thermostat.

Guests will also have exclusive use of the cabin’s snowshoes and kicksled for further daytime exploration.

Cabins can be booked through Off the Map Travel for travel until mid-April and will re-open in January 2019.

"The wilderness surrounding Kilpisjarvi is known for its remote and uninterrupted Arctic tundra," said Jonny Cooper, founder of Off the Map Travel and Arctic travel expert. "

"Away from any manmade light pollution, it is here that that the wilderness camp is placed for the winter, giving guests the best possible opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and simply enjoy the silence of the Arctic plains."

The experience starts at 6pm where an experienced guide transports guests by snowmobile to their room for the night before teaching them how to make campfire and grill some local sausages.

Local snacks, hot drinks and breakfast are also included in the overnight experience.

Itineraries can be tailor-made. A 3-night, 4-day itinerary costs from £1599 per person based on two adults sharing on a full board basis.

This includes private transfers to and from the airport in Tromso, accommodation for two nights in a log chalet and one in the new Aurora Wilderness Camp with all meals. Flights not included.
