Glimmer of hope as hotels re-open
Hotels in the downtown and French Quarter of New Orleans have re-opened with no major structural damage, tourist chiefs have said.
Although only currently occupied by relief workers and government agencies, the fact the properties are open at all is being seen a positive step for the city’s tourism industry.
A spokeswoman said the ten hotels have electricity, air conditioning and show no signs of major damage.
“The fact that the hotels opened is a sure sign that the tourist area will be open and habitable within a reasonable time frame,” she said.
The New Orleans Visitors and Convention Bureau and Louisiana Office of Tourism said tourism is expected to resume in the new year.
But tourist chiefs are now facing a new battle. In addition to restoring the fabric of New Orleans and the infrastructure, they must now restore the shattered image of the city.
British holidaymakers have been returning with horror stories of gun attacks and rapes as New Orleans descended into chaos.
More to follow.
