Global law enforcement operation nets over 100 airline fraudsters
Over 100 arrests took place at airports worldwide after a huge coordinated police operation investigating stolen credit card transactions.
Law enforcement agencies held raids at 80 airports and detained 118 people accused of buying plane tickets online using stolen or fake credit card data.
The operation was organized at coordinating centers at Europol in The Hague, Interpol in Singapore and Ameripol in Bogota, spanning 45 countries and over 60 airlines.
The International Air Transport Association also took part in the action.
"It’s a billion-dollar a year problem for the airline industry and the volume of traffic is huge," said Europol Chief Rob Wainwright.
"This operation is another example of law enforcement and the private sector working seamlessly together, to prevent and fight cybercrime – this time identity theft and credit card fraud," Wainwright added.
He said the arrests came from identifying 281 suspicious transactions over the two days.
