Global Network Clustering and VISTAS Rusty Nail to be Featured at ITB Berlin Next Spring

Workshop title: Global Network Clustering – Collaborating to Create the Green Economy Sustainable Tourism Mosaic.

"Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 – An International Mosaic of the Green Tourism Economy" will be featured as an event at ITB next year.

If you are at ITB you can come and judge for yourself from a worldwide choice of one hundred tourism destinations under sustainable management.

The list is a collaborative effort of several leading organisations centred on the application of the GSTR standard led by Albert Salman of GreenDestinations.info and Valere Tjolle of Vision on Sustainable Tourism.

The list will launch the newly formed Green Destinations Community, who will be using the GSTR and other Innovation tools to assess the current destination situation and benchmark their implementation of sustainable tourism.

The listing will provide the basis of a collaborative effort to map the Global Green Tourism Economy in the post Rio+20 2015 Development Agenda, in which Tourism Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) is become increasingly prominent.

The event aims to be part of the 2015 Development Agenda debate, highlighting the leading global NGO-led action towards the multi-stakeholder implementation of Agenda 21 sustainable tourism development in the current 10 Year Framework Program for Tourism SCP.

This event aims to bring institutional, business and NGO tourism networks together in a global green tourism innovation cluster to collaborate on a map of SCP implementation in tourism destinations and also along its supply chain.

Each network can sign up to the process and take away on-line tools to create this mosaic collectively.

The Green Destinations Community will benchmark sustainability growth in the mosaic, and the DestiNet Sustainable Tourism Market Place and Good Practice database will monitor the extent of SCP processes in the tourism supply chain around the globe. This will provide international, national regional and local maps of green tourism activity.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Innovation Cluster will use  DestiNet as its coordinating platform and offer tools to map SCP Supply chains and destinations mosaics to the networks who wish to be part of the cluster’s collective information base.

Most networks have tourism destinations decision makers among their membership, and the Innovation cluster will in this global SCP mapping process also help move tourism destinations themselves towards sustainability. Destination decision-makers can use the Destination Innovation Group Toolkit to improve sustainable management of their tourism destinations within the path of overall sustainable development.

To continue the tourism sustainability debate, the VISTAS Spotlight on Irresponsible Tourism will be continued, monitoring last year’s cases and looking closely this year at the case of Dubai and its rise as the runaway new capital of modern tourism development, and how this impacts on sustainable tourism development. The presentation aims to establish a parallel list of unsustainable development impacts that affect important green tourism landscapes, attractions and activities within the global tourism knowledge community.
