Going green: best and worst airlines
In the US domestic market, three airlines — Continental, JetBlue and Frontier — were rated the most carbon efficient, according to Brighter Planet.
American Eagle came in last in the ratings, using more than twice as much energy per passenger as other airlines.
Internationally, Ryanair, Singapore Airlines, and Delta claimed the best rankings for carbon efficiency of the 20 largest airlines. SAS Scandinavian was the least environmentally friendly.
Brighter Planet says it used an advanced energy and carbon model to analyze more than 9 billion passenger departures and more than 12 trillion passenger-miles flown over a period of over 10 years to rank the airlines.
“Energy efficiency per passenger mile varies tenfold across the entire industry,” said Patti Prairie, CEO of Brighter Planet. She added:
“The importance of our calculations is to show that businesses and individuals don’t necessarily have to cut out air travel or spend more time and money to be more environmentally sensitive, they just need better carbon intelligence.”
