Golden Jubilee a boost for tourism, says BTA

The British Tourist Authority (BTA) says that its overseas offices have seen enquiries increase following last month’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

In Singapore, the BTA reports there has been a 86% jump in visitors to its website and a 44% rise in email enquiries.

Over 35,000 people from around the world entered BTA’s competition to win tickets to the classical and pop concerts at Buckingham Palace.

BTA head of campaigns Jeremy Brinkworth said: “The Golden Jubilee celebrations were witnessed by hundreds of millions of people around the world, showcasing one of the main reasons why visitors from overseas choose Britain as a destination.

“The popularity of Britain’s royal heritage overseas is a positive sign that the ‘Only in Britain. Only in 2002.’ campaign, which leads on heritage attractions and events like the Golden Jubilee, is already showing results. Such high levels of interest in the celebrations will have certainly gone a long way in helping Britain on its first steps to achieving a speedy recovery from the downturn in 2001.”

The British Incoming Tour Operators Association (BITOA) recently reported a downturn in overseas visitors to the UK – but said it was hopeful that the Jubilee celebrations would have a positive impact on numbers later in the year.
