Gondola sabotage has ski area operators worried

Tuesday, 19 Aug, 2019 0

Ski operators in Canada are on alert after the gondola system at Squamish was sabotaged.

A week ago a cable was intentionally cut on the Sea to Sky Gondola causing 31 cars to plummet to the ground.

No one was injured in the late night incident but it has the local BC ski industry on edge.

"Out of due diligence, numerous ski areas are doing extra checks with their security, just focused more on the lifts," said Christopher Nicolson, president of the Canada West Ski Areas Association.

"As far as we know, the motivation is not yet known."

A criminal investigation by the RCMP is underway.

Authroities say it looks like a professional job and not just an act of vandalism.

"I’ve got to stay away from speculating on the classification of the type of person who would be able to do this, but I would just say this is a unique individual, just in terms of [having] the wherewithal to do this," said Sea to Sky Gondola general manager Kirby Brown.

The operator said the gondola will be out of action until next spring.
