Government considers night flight solution to airport chaos
The government is mulling solutions to help ease airport chaos this summer.
It is apparently considering a short term relaxation of the cap on night flights, the Times reports
It could allow a relaxation of night-flight restrictions under emergency measures.
Grant Shapps is looking at the proposal, to allow longer gaps between departures to ease pressure in airport terminals.
Currently there is cap on night flights at some airports based on flight path noise constraints.
It comes airports and airlines struggle to rehire staff numbers let go during the pandemic.
It has led to airports like Gatwick proactively cancelling flights throughout the summer.
About 60,000 workers were laid off during the pandemic.
The government has called on airlines not to sell flights they cannot deliver.
Additionally, British Airways workers have voted to strike over the summer at Heathrow, potentially adding to the chaos.
