Government urges council support for summer ‘pop-up’ campsites

The government is urging local councils to waive red tape and allow the extension of pop-up campsites across England. It comes as popular holiday hotspots are expecting a flood of visitors this summer on staycations, with hotel and holiday rental bookings surging.

Last year, measures were introduced allowing businesses to open temporary ‘pop-up’ campsites without the need for planning permission. It enables tourism and hospitality sectors businesses to meet spikes in demand.

The government is asking councils use ‘a flexible approach.’ Under the new measures temporary use of land as a commercial campsite is allowed for up to 56 days.
