Greece signs deal with WTM
Greece is planning to capitalise on its huge exposure this summer by signing a brand partnership agreement with World Travel Market 2004, which will be held at London’s ExCel from November 8-11.
Greece surprisingly won Euro 2004 and will again be in the spotlight when it hosts the Olympic Games, which begin on Friday.
But so far, the media exposure has not led to an increase in tourism. Bookings from the UK are down around 25 per cent on last summer, partly because Greece is perceived to be more expensive than before it adopted the Euro and many holidaymakers have switched to eastern European destinations.
The Greek National Tourist Office and Greece’s Ministry of Tourism plan to use the tie-up with WTM to demonstrate its range of products and become a top player in the international meetings industry.
GNTO president Harry Coccossis said: “Greece has excellent meetings venues and services which have been further improved by the brilliant new facilities and infrastructure in Athens built for the Games.
“WTM is an ever-improving exhibition, which results in GNTO’s ever-increasing presence. We certainly appreciate the important role they have played in helping to increase tourism to our country over the years.”
WTM group exhibition director Fiona Jeffery said: “We will be working with the GNTO and the Ministry to ensure they are able to capitalise wholeheartedly on the many business opportunities that WTM has to offer.”
