Green Tourism may get royal award
Andrea Nicholas of GTBS
GTBS Shortlisted for Royal Recognition
The world-leading green accreditation scheme has been shortlisted for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2012, one of the most prestigious honours that can be bestowed on any business.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) – which grades businesses that demonstrate high levels of commitment in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable tourism with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards – is in the running for this year Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development.
GTBS members are scrutinised on more than 145 separate measures by qualified advisors before being accredited with the relevant award, making it one of the most scrupulous green accreditation schemes in the world. Their green efforts could be honoured on 21st April when the Queen makes awards, on the advice of Prime Minister David Cameron.
"This is fantastic news because it means our hard work on sustainable development is being recognized" said Andrea Nicholas, Managing Director of the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
"Although its the GTBS as a company that is in the running, we feel like we are there because of the ripple effect of the efforts of our members."
"We have almost 2,500 members throughout the UK and we’ve advised a further 5,000 businesses."
"All together we’ve advised some 7,500 businesses on how to reduce their environmental impact, lower their running costs and source food and other produce locally whenever possible to help the local economy and the environment."
