Guangdong Prepares for International Tourism and Culture Festival
In a dynamic move to increase awareness of its diverse tourism resources and showcase its rich local culture, the Guangdong Tourism Administration is staging the 2006 Guangdong International Tourism and Culture Festival in Guangzhou and several other centres in the important Chinese province from November 24 – 30.
Sponsored by the China National Tourism Administration and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the week long festival is designed to promote international tourism exchanges and to share the essence of the province’s local culture.
While the grand opening ceremony will be held in Guangzhou’s Tianhe Sports Centre on November 24 with a series of other activities also scheduled to take place in the city formerly known as Canton other events have been planned for provincial centres of Shenzen (Hakka Cultural Week), Jiangmen (carnival and tourism Week), Zhangjian (tourism gourmet festival), Zhaoqing (International Mountaineering Festival), Qingyuan (International Cultural Festival of Yingshi Rocks), Zhuhai (6th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition), Zhongshan (gourmet festival), Foshan, Jieyang, Maoming, Shaoguan, Heyuan and Shantou.
In total more some 80 events are planned; 27 are to be staged in Guangzhou including the Guangzhou International Food Festival and several mega tourism events.
Guangdong Province received some 95 million international visitors in 2005. While many arrivals are from Hong Kong and Macau, Australia is also an important source market for the southernmost province of mainland China.
