Gunmen open fire on Ivory Coast beach
Gunmen have opened fire on beachgoers in the Ivory Coast resort of Grand Bassam killing at least 14 civilians and two soldiers.
It is believed four gunmen stormed the Etoile Du Sud hotel around lunchtime on Sunday, local time, and opened fire on the packed beach, shooting indiscriminately with Kalashnikovs while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’.
Reports say the victims include four Europeans, including one French and one German national..
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed reports of an armed attack in the resort and told British citizens to avoid the area if possible and follow the instructions of the security authorities.
The attack follows similar attacks on hotels popular with foreign tourists in Burkina Faso in January, which left 30 people dead, and in Mali last November, when 20 people were killed.
