Hawaii tourism grinds to a virtual halt
Inbound traffic to the Hawaiian Islands has slowed to just a handful amid a state-wide self-quarantining order.
This time last year Hawaii was welcoming about 30,000 arrivals a day but Sunday saw just 167 out-of-state visitors.
State Transportation Department spokesman Tim Sakahara said the number of vacationers is likely even less, as some of these may be college students returning home or people visiting family.
In total there were more than 800 arrivals made up mostly of returning residents and flight crew members in transit.
Hawaii governor David Ige recently issued a mandatory, 14-day quarantine for all inbound visitors and returning residents.
"With the majority of Hawaii’s covid-19 cases linked to travel, it is critical that we further mitigate the spread of the virus by both residents and visitors who are coming from out-of-state," Ige said.
"These actions are extreme, but they will help flatten the curve and lay the groundwork for a quicker recovery."
Ige also imposed mandatory quarantine on interisland travel
Non-compliance of the order could lead to a $5,000 fine and/or up to a year in prison.
According to the latest Hawaii health department data there are 204 cases of covid-19.
