Head west for the best snow

Spring-like conditions continue in the Alps, but North America – especially the US – has enjoyed significant snowfall, particularly in the northern Rockies and southern Cascades. Some US resorts will get a whopping 50cms or more. Here’s a round up of conditions in the most popular ski resorts worldwide from the Ski Club.

AUSTRIA
Across Austria, temperatures were due to reach double digits this week, although it is due to get colder and Obergurgl and Solden might get some snow. Unfortunately, Saalbach is due some rain.

FRANCE
The mercury was expected to hit 17 degrees in the high altitude resort of Chamonix this week; elsewhere the weather is mild, with chilly mornings but warm afternoons. In the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, some snow was expected high up this week, although it was due to rain on the lower slopes of Morzine and Avoriaz.

SWITZERLAND
Some light snow was expected today in the Jungfrau region and also in the higher resorts of the Portes du Soleil.

ITALY
In the popular Milky Way region, temperatures soared to 18 degrees this week. In Cervinia it was slightly cooler, but temperatures were still expected to hit double figures. No significant snowfall is expected across the country.

EASTERN EUROPE
The Bulgarian resort of Bansko enjoyed fresh snowfall last weekend, which caused the World Cup downhill race to be cancelled. Further flurries were expected this week. Jasna in Slovakia also got some light flurries.

USA
Massive quantities of snow were forecast across the northern Rockies and the southern Cascades. Jackson Hole got 80cm, alongside Timberline and Big Sky in Montana. These quantities are amounting to the most substantial periods of snowfall so far this season – and more is on its way.

Resorts in Utah and Colorado also got a dusting.
On the other side of the country, there are some good quantities in Vermont, with 5cm of fresh snow in Killington and Stowe. Temperatures remain around about -20C.

CANADA
Sunshine Village and Lake Louise in Banff got a fresh dusting of snow while Tremblant in Quebec got more than 30 cms this week.
In British Columbia, Fernie had a fantastic powder day this past weekend, although for the most part have not been seeing anywhere near the quantities of snow that their southerly neighbour states have seen.
