Heathrow expansion plans due
Plans for a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow are due to be revealed today.
The draft plans for expanding the London airport include the demolition of up to 700 houses, the BBC reports.
The £7 billion project could see annual passenger numbers rise from 67 million to 116 million by 2030.
Airport owner BAA believes there is a strong economic case for adding further satellite buildings and even a sixth terminal to support the new runway. This would be in addition to the fifth terminal which is due to open in 2008.
BAA Heathrow managing director Mick Temple reportedly told the BBC: “What is certain is that Heathrow cannot afford to stand still. We need to plan for the future and ensure we provide excellent customer service and facilities to both our passengers and airlines.
“The challenge for us is to secure the continued growth and benefits of Heathrow in a way which is both socially and eenvironmentally responsible.”
The plan will go out for consultation until October.
