Heathrow fire cost ‘tens of millions’

The substation fire that grounded flights at London Heathrow cost the airport ‘tens of millions,’ it says.

It caused the grounding of flights for nearly an entire day.

More than 270,000 passengers were delayed or suffered cancelled flights in the immediate aftermath.

The airport still hasn’t ruled out suing the National Grid for damages.

It will likely wait for the report from energy regulator Ofgem.

CEO Thomas Woldbye said Heathrow will “invest in agreement with the airlines to improve the physical resilience” of the airport.

Its lack of resilience was criticized after the 21 March incident.

The fire was preventable, a report by the National Energy System Operator said.

Woldbye slept through the night during the fire and, said he would have ‘liked to see my personal role play out differently.’

Woodbye revealed half year profits were down by a third although passenger numbers were at a record high.

It welcomed 39.9 million passengers in the first six months of this year.
