Hi-tech plans for passports
UK: Home Secretary reveals plans for fingerprint and eye recognition
Passports of the future could contain the holder’s fingerprints and eye patterns, under proposals released by the Government.
The Home Secretary David Blunkett and other G8 ministers have agreed plans for the new document, which will hold special chips capable of storing such personal information as the complex and unique patterns in the iris.
The passports could be in use within two years, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph, and travellers could face automated checks at border crossings within five years’ time.
Blunkett, speaking at a meeting in Paris, said: “We need to be ahead of the game in using technology in the fight against international crime and terrorism. These criminals operate without respect for international boundaries.”
