Hidden cash and freebies – the lure of social media

Saturday, 30 May, 2014 0

We do enjoy a ‘good news’ story in the world of social media and this week’s is a cracker. A person using the Twitter handle @HiddenCash  has been posting cryptic clues and messages that lead followers to envelopes of cash hidden around San Francisco. The mystery individual started sending messages a week ago and has already attracted more than 230k followers. Described as a ‘social experiment for good’ it’s no surprise that the offer of free money has attracted a lot of attention. With other cities on the list, it looks like the person behind @HiddenCash really is out to make the world smile!

The security guard whose holiday request went viral (if you didn’t see it, read the story here) plans to donate all the freebies he was offered, including a holiday to Las Vegas, in memory of teenage fundraiser, Stephen Sutton. Greg Heaslip said "I don’t want any of the free stuff. I’m going to donate it all to the Stephen Sutton charity so it goes to a good cause". In case you were wondering, Greg had his holiday request signed off and is going to Chessington World of Adventures with his family #GregGotTheHoliday

One of our favourite finds this week has to be the Google Night Walk through Marseille, France. Using a combination of maps, music, story, and narration, users can virtually walk through the streets of the city and experience the sights and sounds that bring it to life. We’re sure you will love it and can’t wait to explore other cities through this magical medium.

More news from Google is that it has launched its first driver-less car. The new fleet of 100 experimental cars look like a futuristic Fiat 500 – with the major difference of course being no accelerator, break or gear stick. The only thing a ‘driver’ needs is a red button for panic stops, and a green start button. Is it finally time to take the driver out of driving? Google certainly thinks so.
