Hilton to sell historic Edinburgh hotel

Sunday, 05 Oct, 2006 0

The historic Hilton Edinburgh Caledonian is likely to change hands as Hilton Hotels Corportation looks to reduce its number of wholly owned properties.

The company has revealed that it is “investigating options” for the sale of the 251-room landmark hotel, affectionately known as ‘The Caley’.

The planned sell off is part of the company’s ongoing international strategy to reduce the number of directly owned hotel assets and retain the long term management contracts.

Built in 1903, Hilton has owned the Edinburgh Caledonian since March 2000 – the previous owners were Moat House.

The hotel underwent a £6.6 million refurbishment last year.

Hilton UK and Ireland area president Howard Friedman said: “The potential sale of the Edinburgh Caledonian works to support Hilton’s overriding growth strategy, where the aim is to grow the managed and franchised strands of the business and reduce asset ownership.

“As always our aim is to retain the management contract of the hotel and keep the Hilton brand name above the door.”
