Hiltons to rejoin as major global force

US-based Hilton Hotels Corporation is poised to reunite with UK-owned Hilton Group in a deal tipped to be worth as much as £3.6 billion ($6.3bn).

The two brands are set to come together to create a global force of almost 1,000 hotels for the first time in 40 years under a single name.

They split in 1964 with HHC taking responsibility for the Hilton name in the US and Hilton Group handling properties elsewhere in the world.

Ladbrokes acquired Hilton 18 years ago and adopted the famous hotel name after the acquisition of Stakis in 1998.

Hilton Group today confirmed that discussions were ongoing about the sale of its lodging arm Hilton International but were “subject to the resolution of a number of issues”.

A statement said: “The board confirms that it has received an indicative offer from Hilton Hotels Corporation, which it is currently evaluating.”

But the company added that “there can be no certainty” that a sale of Hilton International will take place and a further announcement would be made “in due course”.

HHC, the third largest US hotel chain with 500 properties across a range of brands, said it was in talks to acquire the lodging business of Hilton Group but cautioned that the deal could still fall apart, according to Reuters.

Hilton International operates more than 400 properties worldwide. HHC and Hilton Group also share responsbility for the Conrad brand of 17 hotels in 13 countries.
