Award Recognizes Hotel’s Green Emphasis and Energy Efficiency

The historic Hotel Andaluz, in the former La Posada Hotel in Downtown Albuquerque, has received the New Mexico Achievement Award for 2010 from the New Mexico Recycling Coalition.

The award recognizes individuals, businesses, municipalities and educational facilities for their outstanding work to promote recycling and composting throughout New Mexico.

The Hotel received the award for its green initiatives during its renovation and demolition.
The Hotel underwent a massive $30 million renovation and a complete upgrade of every system on the property. The Hotel is also applying for LEED Gold status and, when awarded, will be one of the few LEED Gold Hotels in the nation.

The original hotel opened as La Posada in 1939 by native New Mexican Conrad Hilton and was Hilton’s second hotel. Gary Goodman purchased the hotel in 2005, completely renovated it and today; it is being recognized for both its historic significance and environmentally responsible design.

“Our goal is to be a major gathering spot for locals and travelers, a unique spot where comfort is first and foremost, while sustaining the environment,” Goodman explained. “We are proud to have achieved a balance between historic preservation and environmental sustainability,” said Darin Sand of the Goodman Realty Group.

The hotel has implemented water conservation, energy control systems, eco consciousness interior finishes and utilizes solar energy. Some examples of the hotel’s commitment to being eco-conscious:

  • Regular toilets were replaced with low-flow, dual-flush technology, which reduces the water use more than 45% annually.
  • The LED interior lighting lasts longer, and are resistant to heat, cold and shock.
  • Much of the furniture is bamboo – bamboo renews itself constantly and is an endless renewable resource.
  • A 73-panel solar thermal system was installed on the roof of the 10th floor to provide power to the property.
