A British woman is in a serious condition in hospital after contracting Legionnaires’ disease on holiday in Greece.

Donna Jobling, 57, from Hull has serious lung disease issues and is in intensive care but currently stable in a Crete hospital.

It is thought she contracted it at a Crete hotel.

She travelled with easyJet holidays which has now moved all other customers out of the hotel.

“We’re so sorry to hear that Ms Jobling is unwell, and we’re continuing to support her and her family,” the company said.

She was on a two-week all-inclusive holiday, and was taken ill over a week ago.

“We just don’t know what’s going to happen. was She is stable but under constant watch,” said niece Klaire Keita.

The Greek health ministry issued an advisory to hotels in Crete to ‘raise awareness among all those involved in monitoring the quality of water especially with regard to Legionella.’

The unnamed hotel is assisting local health authorities on the island to ascertain the Legionella source.

Legionnaires’ disease is contracted through inhaling tiny water droplets with the bacteria.

This means the source could be water storage or filtration systems, air conditioning or hot tubs.

Symptoms can indicate difficulty breathing, a high temperature and chest pains.

A Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman in hospital in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”
