Holidaymakers urged to cut water consumption in Balearics

Sunday, 28 Jun, 2019 0

The Balearic Islands government has launched a campaign to highlight the importance of saving water on its islands and is asking holidaymakers to do their part.

The message is aimed at tourists to Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera as well as residents.

Officials say that, despite a wealth of natural resources attracting thousands of tourists every year, the consumption of water in the Balearic Islands is not sustainable on a long-term basis.

The campaign comes at a time with the islands’ water reserves have dropped two points in May 2019 compared to the previous month, currently standing at a 58% average. Authorities say the figure is concerning figure given the lack of estimated rainfall in June.

The campaign states: "These islands have many things, but little water." An information video has been put together in several languages, including English.

At the baggage carousels at Palma de Mallorca airport, a transparent suitcase, half-filled with water showcases key messages about the islands’ water shortage and illustrates top tips for saving water.

A website has also been created featuring the water saving tips and highlighting how much water can be saved by making simple choices.

Holidaymakers can help by turning off taps when shaving or cleaning teeth, taking shorter showers and ensuring taps aren’t dripping. A dripping tap can waste 30 litres a day, the campaign says.

The water-saving campaign forms part of a wider strategy aimed at creating a more long-term and sustainable tourism industry and is one of the initiatives funded by the Islands’ sustainable tourism tax.
