Hong Kong based EGL Tours lays off tour guides
Hong Kong travel firm EGL Tours is cutting dozens of tour guide jobs.
The company is laying off about 120 of its tour guides as the tour industry continues to struggle through months of upheaval caused by the pandemic.
The company has set aside HK$20 million for severance payments and tour guides made redundant will get priority for new jobs when the industry starts to recover.
"We hope the sum can help them ride through such hard times," Executive Director Steve Huen Kwok-chuen said of the severance payments, which average at HK$166,000.
EGL Tours had previously asked employees to take unpaid leave to safeguard jobs.
The Hong Kong tour industry has fared worse than many other Asian destinations after several months of pro-democracy protests caused a collapse of the inbound tourism market for several months before the Covid pandemic.
