Hopeless in Hopenhagen

Wednesday, 07 Jan, 2010 0

BANGKOK – The travel & tourism industry will be profoundly affected, for better and for worse, by the outcome of the Copenhagen climate change summit, says Imtiaz Muqbil, executive editor, Travel Impact Newswire

"Understanding what happened, why and how it will affect travel & tourism in future will be critical towards helping the industry a) deal with the changes to come; and b) become an agent of change itself," says Muqbil.

As the only travel trade journalist to have covered the Copenhagen summit as well as two previous rounds of the climate change talks in Bali and Bangkok, Muqbil claims to have a deeper understanding than any other trade journalist about what was happening both in public and behind the scenes of the Copenhagen talks.

He says, "I have just completed a detailed 6,000-word analysis of the outcome of the Copenhagen summit and its future implications for travel & tourism.

"Written from the perspective of the developing world, the analysis, entitled "Hopeless in ‘Hopenhagen’: 10 Ways Travel & Tourism Will Be Affected," is an attempt to help the T&T industry better prepare for the end of the oil era, a transition that will be fraught with immense technical, financial and legal complexities."

The analysis strives to:

1. Simplify and explain the causes of the failure and what was really at stake in the entire process;

2. Identify the winners and losers, as well as the hidden agendas of the various players;

3. Provide early warning signs for the travel & tourism industry to be mindful of;

4. Recommend ways by which the travel & tourism industry can manage the challenges ahead.

"I believe that unless the industry fully and thoroughly understands all facets of the issues involved, it risks making some monumental mistakes in charting its future course, and hence going from the frying pan into the fire," Muqbil added.

The report has been kept totally free of advertising and sponsorship in order to ensure total independence and objectivity.

To help recoup costs, it is being distributed on a user-pays basis at a universally affordable price of only Euro 110 per recipient.

The report will be dispatched following confirmation of payment. A receipt will be issued upon request.
