Stuck between a rock and a hot cross bun? Here’s an Easter escape
Rather than stuffing yourself with eggs this Easter, why not take a four-day city break to Yerevan instead? With many structures built in pink tufa limestone, Armenia’s capital nestles beneath Mount Ararat, the stopping-point for Noah’s Ark. Split by the Hrazdan River, the city is dotted with beautiful monastic complexes, pivotal in the development of Christian architecture.
Yerevan is known as the ‘City of Cafés’, with locals drinking surj (Armenian coffee) and freshes (fruit smoothies) with a pastry or crepe in the downtown’s many teahouses and coffee bars. Nearby are the Cascades – giant white steps leading down to Victory Park – the city’s precise mid-point, Republic Square, and ‘BBQ Street’, a road proving Armenia’s obsession with the shish kebab. Bargain-hunters should head to the Vernissage bazaar for hand-made crafts, or the grand Opera House, showing world-class performances for just over £1.
The Armenians are among the planet’s oldest peoples (Yerevan was founded in 782BC) and history is abundant in the Matenadaran, full of many ancient manuscripts, books and scrolls. But Yerevan has a modern face too, with an efficient metro system and regular trolleybuses.
Prices for The Christian Heartland of Ancient Armenia start from £795 pp with The Traveller (020 7436 9343; www.the-traveller.co.uk) include flights (Heathrow), all taxes, three nights’ B&B in a four-star hotel, excursions and a city tour. Plenty of free time is included. In late March, the average temperature is around 10˚C.
Yerevan is just one of cultural tour operator The Traveller’s range of ‘Taster Weekend’ short breaks – others include Aleppo, Jerusalem and Damascus.
