Hotel cleaner killed by shark

A hotel worker has been killed by a shark at Shelly Beach, off Australia’s east coast, close to where another surfer was attacked the previous day.

The 41-year-old Japanese national, who was working as a cleaner at a local hotel in the New South Wales town of Ballina, had been sitting on his board waiting to catch a wave when the shark bit his legs off, said Sky News.

He was pulled out of the water by a group of surfers, but he quickly bled to death, said the town’s mayor David Wright.

The victim, who has not been named, had been living in the town and worked at a surf shop as well as working as a cleaner at a hotel.

Beaches in the area were closed following the attack, which happened just 12 miles south of Seven Mile Beach, where another surfer was attacked on Sunday.

Jabez Reitman survived that attack, which happened near the popular tourist resort of Byron Bay, but suffered wounds to his back and buttocks.

Last summer, a swimmer was killed by a shark at Byron Bay.
