How to save on spring break airline fares
Spring break advice comes just in time from Bing Travel, which has some suggestions for coping with higher airline prices this year.
Overall, air fares are up 4.1% from the 2011 spring break “but there are deals to be had if you play your cards right,” according to the 2012 Spring Break Travel Forecast.
Airline tickets to warm weather destinations are up even more, rising by nearly 16% to an average price of $468.
So, how to save money on airline fares?
—Be flexible, says Bing. The best or cheapest weeks to travel this spring break are the last two weeks of April when prices are expected to be down 4% from last year.
—Airline prices are higher at most warm weather destinations such as Miami and Cancun, but airfare to some areas such as Houston have decreased.
—If travelers look carefully, they can find deals. For example, Alexandria, VA has an average ticket price of $356, while New Orleans, often voted the “Best City for Singles,” has average airfare deals for $351.
—Spring break flights to Europe have increased nearly 11% – from $815 in 2011, to an average of $907 this year. “If the price increase doesn’t scare you away and you’re still headed abroad, consider departing from New York City, as flights to Europe from John F. Kennedy International Airport ($807) and Newark Liberty International Airport ($835) are the cheapest,” Bing says.
