Tourists keen to experience the wrath of a tropical storm at close quarters

Tourist resorts along the United States Gulf Coast are bracing themselves for the arrival of Hurricane Claudette, which is predicted to hit the shores today or tomorrow.

After buffeting the Mexican sunshine resort of Cancun at the weekend, the storm is now moving towards Galveston Island, on the coast of Texas – and forecasters are predicting winds of at least 80 miles per hour and massive waves whipped up by the hurricane.

Bizarrely enough, it appears that many tourists in the United States are keen to experience the storm at close range, and few have changed their holiday plans because of the weather forecast.

In fact, according to newspapers and websites based around the US Gulf Coast, many are keen to experience whatever Claudette can throw at them. One told the online news provider Houston 24: “We have never seen hurricane waves before – there’s never any big waves in Galveston.”
