Hurricane warning for US-bound travellers
Travellers to the US are being warned that Hurricane Harvey will continue to affect southern states from Texas to Louisana until tomorrow.
The Foreign Office said high winds, heavy rain and severe flooding are still expected with the possibility of sporadic tornadoes throughout the region.
The US National Hurricane Centre is warning that another 20 inches of rainfall is expected today, on top of the 30 inches of rain that has already fallen in Houston, killing at least nine people and causing thousands to flee from flooded homes.
British Airways’ flights to Houston remain suspended today as the city’s George Bush International Airport airport is closed due to the severe flooding.
"We are keeping other services this week under review, pending the latest information from the airport authorities and the emergency services dealing with the flooding," it said.
BA added that, given the uncertainty caused by the bad weather, anyone due to travel to or from Houston, Austin or New Orleans up to and including Thursday August 31 can delay their travel up to and including Wednesday September 13, even if their flight is shown as operating.
The storm has also caused cruise lines to divert ships away from the Port of Galveston in Texas and cancel some itineraries. They are expected to return to the Port of Galveston by the middle of the week.
