Hurricanes don’t blow away Florida tourism
Hurricanes Charley, Ivan, Frances and Jeanne did not dampen the enthusiasm of tourists, according to Visit Florida.
Almost 77 million people visited the state last year, up 3% from the previous year, according to statistics from the official state tourism agency.
Most major metropolitan areas such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Keys were unscathed by the hurricanes. Other areas, including Orlando, had only minor or minimal damage. Few reminders of the storm remain.
However, some areas still feel the impact, including Port Charlotte, Pensacola, the 72-mile Space Coast (Cape Kennedy) and Daytona Beach, according to a report in USA Today.
Some scattered hotels in those areas are closed, and visitors are advised to call ahead for the status.
