Hurtigruten suffers major IT hack
Norway based cruise line Hurtigruten said it was hit by a major cyber attack shutting down most of its systems.
It said it has the hallmarks of a ransomware attack which generally aims to cripple IT systems.
Companies are then forced to pay a ransom to regain control of their systems.
"It’s a serious attack. The entire worldwide digital infrastructure of Hurtigruten seems to have been hit," said Ole-Marius Moe-Helgesen, Hurtigruten’s Chief Digital Officer.
The company alerted authorities when the attack was detected but has not said whether the hackers have yet demanded a ransom.
The line implemented ‘comprehensive measures’ to limit disruption to the business.
Although leisure cruising is still suspended due to the pandemic, Hurtigruten’s coastal ferry services in Norway continue to run.
Communications with the ferries have been unaffected, the company says.
It doesn’t expect the cyberattack to lead to a ‘material financial effect.’
