Ibiza restricting the number of rent-a-car vehicles for summer season 2026
Ibiza is cutting daily rental car traffic by around 2,000 vehicles compared to last summer, following the introduction of a new legal cap. The move is part of a wider push by island authorities to ease congestion and promote more sustainable mobility.
Under the new rules, a maximum of 17,668 vehicles are allowed on the island’s roads each day during peak season, with 14,000 of those allocated to rental cars. That represents a roughly 12% drop in hire vehicles year-on-year. The restrictions will apply from June 1 to September 30, 2026, and are expected to return for a four-month period in 2027.
Early booking becomes essential
Ibiza remains an easy destination for self-drive vacations, but warns availability will be tighter due to the reduced fleet size. Travelers are urged to plan ahead and secure rental cars well in advance, particularly for peak summer months like July and August.
It is consequently advised to book a car at the same time as flights and accommodations, as last-minute reservations will be much harder to secure under the new system. Choosing compact and modern vehicle categories may also improve availability, as these are better suited to the island and more widely available.
Despite the cap, the booking process itself remains unchanged. Rental companies will handle required permits behind the scenes, allowing customers to book as usual—either through travel advisors or directly online.
Push for greener fleets
The 14,000 rental car quota is being distributed among providers through a ranking system that favors companies operating newer, lower-emission vehicles. In 2026, additional incentives will be given for electric and more environmentally friendly cars.
This means the number of vehicles each rental partner can offer will depend on how sustainable their fleet is. Experts are encouraging partners to invest in cleaner, newer vehicles to secure a larger share of the quota.
The new policy signals a clear shift toward better traffic management and more sustainable tourism on Ibiza, with the rental car sector expected to play a key role in that transition.
