Ibiza study reveals drug use figures

A study has lifted the lid on the behaviour of British visitors to the Mediterranean island of Ibiza, finding that many young visitors are using the drug ecstasy up to five times a week.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the survey carried out by Liverpool’s John Moores University found that 37 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds used the drug five or more times a week while on the island, compared to just one in 20 who would use the drug with the same frequency while at home. Furthermore, out of 1,000 people reportedly interviewed, 33 per cent said they had used cocaine for the first time in Ibiza.

Karen Hughes, the lead researcher, is quoted as saying: “Ibiza is still the most popular foreign holiday destination among young Brits, with a quarter of a million under-30s travelling there every year. Just over half of young visitors use illegal drugs during their holiday.” She added: “There are real dangers in experimenting everywhere. But particularly in unfamiliar settings.”
