SINGAPORE – Travel companies continue to seek ways to harness the power of social media to open up new business opportunities.

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) has come up with the idea of a “Friends and Family” programme that will encourage its more than 330,000 staff to promote hotel bookings to their social networks.

The new global IHG Friends and Family programme provides hotel rooms at more than 4,150 hotels worldwide at discounted rates for friends and family of IHG colleagues.

After registering through IHG’s intranet, all staff will receive an email with a unique web link to a personal hotel booking webpage.

Staff can forward the web link to their friends and family, who then click the link to go to this personal web page and book their stays at exclusive rates.

Staff rates apply to any reservation made between now and May 31 for bookings made up to one year in advance of stay.

IHG did not disclose the amount of discount which will be available for friends and families.
