Incoming plane damages landing equipment at Stansted
Flight arrivals to Stansted airport were diverted yesterday after a plane damaged landing equipment preventing landing in the fog.
The issue started at about 7.45am and affected about 20 flights which were due to land at the airport but were instead diverted to Birmingham and East Midlands airports.
Outbound planes were unaffected at the time.
A spokesman for Stansted airport said yesterday: "Earlier this morning an arriving Gulfstream G550 was involved in an incident that has resulted in some damage to our ILS (instrument landing system). The aircraft landed safely.
"As a result of this incident and low visibility there have been restrictions on arriving flights. However, the fog has now lifted and arriving flights are now being accepted.
"Departing flights are unaffected at this time but there could be delays and cancellations later in the day as a result of the earlier disruption to inbound aircraft."
The airport said NATS, who are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ILS equipment, have engineers on site and are currently working to the resolve the issue and return the airfield to normal operations as quickly as possible.
