Indonesian airlines get FAA approval to fly to the US

The US Federal Aviation Administration has upgraded the safety rating for Indonesian aviation enabling airlines in Indonesia to fly to the US for the first time in nearly a decade.
The aviation sector was downgraded back in 2007 over a series of air accidents.
While accidents have continued, most notably the AirAsia crash of 2014, aviation authorities have taken strides to beef up safety and enforce strict penalties for lax safety oversight.
It now complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards and the EU had already approved Indonesian airlines to enter European airspace.
"We should be thankful for our hard work and the US FAA technical support, to help us accomplish this. I recommend that Indonesian airlines prepare themselves to serve US flight routes," said director general for air transportation Suprasetyo.
Suprasetyo said the latest FAA audit began in early 2015 and looked at regulations, operation and airworthiness.
Flag carrier Garuda is likely the only carrier currently in a position to serve the US market, and is looking at flights to New York or Los Angeles beginning next year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
