Inflight mobiles ready by next year
Air passengers will be chattering on mobile phones at 33,000ft by the second half of next year, an inflight mobile phone company has predicted.
OnAir said the service will be available on short haul European flights after it signed a deal with Siemens to provide the technology.
According to the Financial Times, Ericsson is also developing a system that should be available for installation by the end of this year. It will be able to handle 60 simultaneous calls.
But it seems airlines remain unconvinced. British Airways has begun to research the issue with initial feedback from customers indicating they would prefer the service to be limited to text-only.
