Inquiry launched into Qantas near-miss at Perth Airport
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating a near-miss at Perth Airport after a just-landed Qantas flight cut across a runway in front of another Qantas plane ready to take off.
The pilot of the departing flight QF 567 reportedly had to abruptly apply the brakes and aborted take-off.
The ATSB will interview the flight crews and air traffic controllers on duty at the time.
The agency said the incident took place at a runway incursion ‘hotspot’.
According to its data, there have been 88 runway incursion incidents at Perth in the last decade.
Qantas said it is conducting its own inquiries and is assisting with the ATSB investigation.
The just arrived aircraft was supposed to halt at a designated holding point before crossing the runway but for some reason did not, an initial ATSB report said.
Air traffic controllers then informed pilots of both planes to take immediate action.
