InsureandGo highlights ‘extortionate’ tour operator insurance

Another travel insurance company has highlighted the ‘extortionate’ prices charged by tour operators for travel insurance.

InsureandGo has unveiled research which its claims shows tour operators have the most expensive travel insurance premiums in the market.

It says the research found the average single trip premium from tour operators is £69.44, compared to the £54.84 average for the market and the £33.03 average premium from the 25% most competitive providers.

For annual trip travel insurance, it claims tour operators are charging £129.07, compared to the £123.03 average for the market and £71.67 for the 25% most competitive insurers.

Perry Wilson, director at InsureandGo, said: “I cannot see how tour operators and travel agents can justify their premiums. Many may well offer good cover but I believe in many cases the prices they charge are far too high.”

Its research, carried out by Defaqto in February 2007, also compared the price of insurance for 17 days to Europe for a family of two adults and two children, aged eight and 10. The results were as follows:

Airtours Gold Cover £89.99 (123% above market average)

First Choice Single Trip Travel £95.96 (138% above)

JMC Classic Travel Insurance £116.96 (190% above)

Manos Holidays Gold Travel Insurance £84 (109% above)

InsureandGo Bronze £26.27 (35% below)

InsureandGo Gold £39.18 (3% below)

Market average £40.28
