Internet giant tells agents to fight commission cuts

Friday, 28 Nov, 2005 0
ABTA Convention special report: Internet giant hotels.com has told independent agents to fight back against the major operators and refuse to accept their commission cuts.

Hotels.com, part of Expedia, is a rival to traditional retailers, but the company’s vice president Europe, Middle East and Africa David Roche had words of support for agents.

“I don’t think they should take the cuts lying down or the veiled threats from (Thomas Cook UK chief executive) Manny Fontenla-Novoa to withdraw stock from agents who do not support them (see separate story).

“They should band together in a much larger group than they are now and go back to negotiate better terms. They also need to diversify, so they are not dependant on these companies.

“I don’t understand why independent agents aren’t more angry, they need to fight this.”
