Investigation launched into emergency landing

Rolls-Royce has launched an investigation after a plane carrying 136 people had to make an emergency landing in Singapore yesterday.

The Cathay Pacific Airbus A330-300 landed safely on Monday after aborting the flight 20 minutes after take-off for Jakarta in Indonesia.

Cathay Pacific said earlier the plane’s crew shut down one of the engines after receiving a warning that it had stalled.

"Fire services met the aircraft on arrival. The aircraft stopped on the taxiway and sparks from the number two engine were reported," said an airline spokesman.

"They were doused by fire extinguisher."

This is the second emergency landing involving a Rolls-Royce engine in six months. Last year, Rolls-Royce faced a safety investigation after one of the engines in a Qantas Airbus A380.

"Cathay Pacific and Rolls-Royce are investigating the incident which has been reported to the Hong Kong civil aviation department," said a spokesman for Cathay Pacific.
