IPW beats Super Bowl for economic impact
The annual International Pow Wow (IPW) travel trade event eclipses the Super Bowl for economic impact, according to event organizers the US Travel Association.
IPW is a travel marketplace attracting up to 6,000 suppliers and buyers from over 70 counties for three days of meetings and presentations.
The association has released a report comparing the economic impact of the 2013 IPW event in Las Vegas with the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis.
The report shows that although Super Bowl attracted many more direct visitors, the IPW produced tangible benefits to the local economy for much longer – up to three years.
It said that IPW 2013 will contribute to an extra 8.8 million international visitors, increasing the total international visitor spend by $28 billion, directly generating $16 billion to US GDP over three years.
"A city’s investment in IPW keeps paying dividends over three years in the form of more international visitors and spending in the host city and throughout the country," said US Travel Association CEO Roger Dow.
Dow also said that inbound international travel generates the third-highest trade surplus of any industry in the US.
IPW 2014 will be held in Chicago from April 5-9.
